Dr. Al Riyami graduated from Ain Shams University in Cairo in December 1980 and after finishing his internship year, he joined the Ministry of Health in early 1982.Following 18 months of rotation in different specialties, he settled down in general medicine. After passing the MRCP Part 1 at his first attempt, he proceeded to Glasgow in March 1986 working as a Registrar in general medicine at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary which is the largest teaching hospital in Scotland.He passed his final part of MRCP (UK) in his first attempt in January 1987. He continued working in general medicine until September 1987 when he moved to the Cardiology department where he trained in clinical and interventional Cardiology for 4 years. He also took the opportunity of researching on the causes of sudden death in Aortic Stenotic patients with LVH. He was awarded a Ph.D. from University of Glasgow in September 1991. He then returned to Oman to join the Royal Hospital Cardiology Department as a Senior Registrar and elevated to Senior Consultant in 1994.In early 1996, he went to Sydney, Australia where he spent 6 months at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital doing interventional Cardiology. On his return, he started PTCA services at the Royal Hospital and in Oman for the first time.
