Why undergo a Health Screening?:

  • Primary goal of the Health Screening is to prevent diseases by detecting it early enough.
  • Current guidelines recommend that Health Screening be performed every 1-3 years before the age of 50years and every year thereafter. If there is a strong family history then it should be done more frequently.
  • Studies show that even a brief tobacco counselling session, by physicians, results in a significant rate of long term smoking cessation.
  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is capable of enhancing the detection of early prostate cancer.
  • It is recommended to do a PAP smear within 3 years of onset of sexual activity and every 1-3years thereafter.
  • Mammography of women >40 years of age is recommended every 1-2 years.
  • For colorectal cancer screening, FOB (Faecal Occult Blood) should be checked every year and either a sigmoidoscopy every 5 years or colonoscopy every 10 years in people aged > 50 years of age.
  • Osteoporsis screening should be performed periodically >60 years of age. If there is a family history of early osteoporsis, eating disorders or steroid treatment it should be started earlier.
  • Vaccinations should be updated yearly. It is recommended to take tetanus every 10 years, Influenza vaccine yearly if >50years and pneumococcal vaccine if >65 years or some other co-morbidity condition. All women of child bearing age should receive 1 dose of MMR and the MPV vaccine has proven to reduce cancer of the cervix.
  • Blood sugar and cholesterol should be checked if >35 years of age and earlier if there are additional risks.
  • If proper interventions including a few therapeutic lifestyle measures are initiated in time, it can have immense health benefits including prevention of coronary disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

What is your Responsibility?

  • Arrive well organised & overnight fasting (No food or drinks for 12 hrs).
  • Speak freely about your concerns.
  • Provide records of your childhood illness & vaccination.
  • Discuss any allergies and adverse reactions to foods and drugs.
  • Bring all prescriptions and medicines you are taking.
  • Speak about any change in your health since the last checkup.
  • When you come for review: Listen carefully and ask questions. If you do not agree and do not understand, speak up.
  • Take a proactive role. Ensure that you have understood well.
  • Bring a stool sample.

What are the Diagnostic tests:

CT (Computer Tomography) —sometimes called CAT scanning—is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. CT scanning combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body. These cross-sectional images of the area being studied can then be examined on a computer monitor, printed or transferred to a CD. CT scans of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) - is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. The images can then be examined on a computer monitor, transmitted electronically, printed or copied to a CD. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (x-rays). Detailed MRI allow physicians to better evaluate various parts of the body and determine the presence of certain diseases that may not be assessed adequately with other imaging methods such as x-ray, ultrasound or CT.

USS (Ultra Sound Scan) or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound exams do not use ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays). Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels. Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

Doppler ultrasound is a special ultrasound technique that evaluates blood flow through a blood vessel, including the body's major arteries and veins in the abdomen, arms, legs and neck.

Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. A mammogram is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

Complex Vaginal Delivery Package

In some situations extra resources are needed during a vaginal delivery. Sometimes it is possible to predict this need, for example delivery of twins, delivery after a previous cesarean section etc. On occasions complications occur during the delivery itself, requiring a greater input, for example prolonged labour, excessive bleeding after delivery etc.
A supplemental charge will therefore be payable in some situations.
The extra charge will be applied in advance where the situation allows and your doctor will be able to advise you of this during your pregnancy. Where the situation is not predictable the doctor or midwife will inform you during your labour or as soon after your delivery as possible.

For further information please speak to your doctor within clinic.
